Cold Brew Red Wine

Yes, it exists.

Sometimes when you try a deep cabernet sauv you can get hints of coffee. But Apothic has taken things a step further by creating a coffee-infused red wine. According to the reviewer, "The blend has a very strong coffee aroma, but it tastes more like red wine with hints of chocolate than your straight-up morning cup of joe. It has a nice finishing hint of cold brew, though, and it's very enjoyable."

And it's available starting April 1st. Would you try it?

  1. Ah, coffee and red wine, two of my favorite beverages. Thanks for this super-interesting and timely post (very speedy!). It sparked me to do a bit of digging, and I learned that this isn't the first time entrepreneurial beverage makers have married wine and coffee.

In 2017, Napa Valley’s Molinari Private Reserve and master roaster John Weaver of Wild Card Roasters partnered to create wine-infused coffee! The process to produce the special coffee beans was as follows: The beans soak in the wine to absorb its flavors, then get dried and hand-roasted. The resulting drink is a "rich small-batch coffee with a blueberry note," according to Molinari. The coffee drink doesn't have a significant amount of alcohol, just a hint of the taste of red wine, especially if you allow the coffee to sit longer after being made. The coffee beans were selling at $19.95 for a half-pound bag in 2017. The reviews I've read on it are all positive, though mostly from around the date of the coffee's launch in March 2017. I'd be curious to see more recent articles or general data on the coffee's popularity to see if it's catching on or staying as a niche product.

I will admit the April 1st start date has me a little skeptical. Poorly timed marketing strategy roll-out or elaborate scheme? ;)

  2. I second a deep love of beverages, especially wine and coffee as I typically find myself have a couple of glasses of wine and still needing to get things done before the night is over and chasing wine with coffee or espresso.

In considering wine and coffee I was led to consider what wines have strong coffee notes. For your reading pleasure below:

    1. Casa de Illana Tresdecinco (Spain)
Hailing from the little-known central Ribera del Jucar appellation near Spain's geographic centre. Full-bodied and succulent, it evokes an espresso spiked with cherry liqueur, with a whisper of old wood on the finish.

    2. Sartori L'Appassito Rosso (Italy)
Herbal showing a seamless, silky texture, juicy berries, chocolate and pleasantly bitter finish.

    3. Château Camplazens La Garrigue (France)
A ripe, almost sweet, slightly herbal red. The cappuccino finish is so pronounced the wine could be served out of a cup in a Milanese coffee bar.

Apparently, it's also possible to make coffee wine yourself if you know a home brewer: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/forum/threads/coffee-wine.421497/

    Cheers!
