News broke a couple days ago that SNL superstar Amy Poehler will directing her first feature film for Netflix, called Wine Country. Though not much has been released about the project yet, sources say the film is about a group of longtime friends who travels to Napa Valley to celebrate one of their 50th birthdays. Shenanigans ensue. Poehler herself will star in the film, alongside other comedy queens like Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Paula Pell, Maya Rudolph, and former SNL writer Emily Spivey.
Having missed Poehler sorely since the end of Parks and Recreation, I'm excited to watch her flex fledgling directorial muscles with this film. I'm sure that the movie will be related to wine only insomuch as there will be a sizable amount consumed on-screen. However, it is still fun to watch California's own Napa Valley be featured as a source of cinematic hilarity and drama. All wineries in Napa will essentially receive free positive PR (assuming the movie does well) and Napa will gain an influx of tourism - people who may come because of the movie but stay because of the wine.
